About Dusty

Dusty Phillips is a woodworker, software developer, and author. Dusty's storied tech career includes coding gigs at the United Nations and Facebook, as well as the authoring of multiple books. As the shift to AI has rapidly eroded the craftsmanship of both coding and writing, Dusty decided to return to his first craft, woodworking, a hobby he's maintained since scroll sawing a horrible napkin holder when he was twelve (sanding was yet to be discovered).

Dusty designs all his own furniture and his bowls are each as unique as the trees they spring from. He is largely self-taught, mostly via an archaic technology known as "magazines" in the 90s as well as a lot of trial and (even more) error. Originally focused on power tool work, Dusty now has an ever-growing collection of hand tools and does more and more of his furniture and picture frame work completely by hand. He's recently trained with Tom Fidgen of The Unplugged Woodshop, and intends to continue hand tool studies in the future.

Dusty lives near a picturesque covered bridge in Southern New Brunswick with his wife, 75 acres of trees, a lot of hand and power tools, and way too much computing equipment. To see remnants of his previous life in technology, have a look at his largely unmaintained blog.
